Status descriptions refer to Blakehill only. Comments in italics are repeated from 2005 report. Where observers’ names given, they refer to last quoted date only.

Birds (Increased nos. of some breeding birds mainly due to increased effort in spring rather than real increase over previous years.)

Number of species now 91.

Mallard Occasional visitor all seasons

Teal Pair present near new pond 22 Feb - the first record for the site

Red-legged Partridge Resident. Pair seen 9 Apr & 10/23/26 May and 26 July. Family of 4 seen, 30 Aug. Probably a second pair at E. end of site, 24 May.

Pheasant Common resident, breeds

Cormorant Occasionally seen overhead

Grey Heron Occasionally seen in spring, summer and autumn in flight.

Sparrowhawk Resident. Regularly seen hunting, mainly away from main "plateau", throughout the year.

Common Buzzard Resident. One bird seen in vicinity of the ruined farmhouse in Jan – Feb resembled a Rough-legged Buzzard due to a dark belly. Three pairs soaring over the site on 25 March – the most seen in previous springs was two. Then 4 birds seen on 10 May. Ad. plus 2 very noisy juvs., 1 July.

Red Kite 2, 21 August (Barbara Reed via Paul Darby) – first for site – reported again on 3 Nov by same observer.

Kestrel Resident. Pair displaying 14 May, perhaps two pairs using the site. Generally commoner in summer than winter.

Merlin Winter resident. First winter period: Pair (or at least a m. and a f.) present throughout, the female seen on 9 dates: Jan 4, 11, 18, 25, 31, Feb 8, Mar 3, 10 & 22, the male on 4: Jan 17, Feb 15, near the f. on Mar 10, and perched on a bush on Mar 31. It is probable that both birds stayed in the area right through the winter, with the male wandering further from Blakehill during its stay. Often seen in low and rapid flight, but also perched on posts all over the site. Both birds were quite confiding at times, allowing close approach to observers who used their cars as hides!

Second winter period: One, 5 Nov (Brian Danby), female on post 21 Nov (probably also 11 Nov but unconfirmed distant view), female on post again 8 Dec for at least 30 mins. Also on 8 Dec a male stooped and caught a Meadow Pipit, W. of site and carried it across site to extreme E. end where landed on ground to feed. One perched on roadway fence, 20 Dec (Brian Danby), female seen preening on post 28 Dec, then two present on 30 Dec, a male perched on a post and another bird, probably female, at the east end of the site.

Hobby Summer visitor. 1 chasing Skylarks, apparently without success, 14 May, and again, 27 June. 1 hunting Swallows, 1 July. 1 juv. soaring on 18 Aug. Finally 1 juv. flying W. across site, 15 Sept., caught a butterfly (Red Admiral?), dropped it, tried to catch it again but missed – the butterfly flew off apparently okay.

Peregrine Wanderer. Two summer records this year - An imm. flew S. over E. of site, 11 June, and an adult soared over on 26 August.

Common Snipe Winter visitor. Two flushed from an area of rough grass on Jan 11 and 3 March. 7 seen on 27 Feb (Stephen Edwards). 1, in flight, 8 Oct, 2 by new pond, 4 Nov (Ken Cypher), and 4 flushed from same area as on 11 Jan on 15 Nov.

Woodcock One flew low and slow over the site from E. to W. on 28 Dec – disappeared among trees around Pool Ground. The first for Blakehill.

Curlew    Present in spring for the second year running.

Black-headed Gull, Common Gull, Lesser Black-backed Gull, Herring Gull Daily commuters over site, even a few imms. at the height of breeding season.

Stock Dove Resident. Common at all seasons.

Wood Pigeon As Stock dove.

Collared Dove Resident. Mainly seen near Leigh entrance.

Cuckoo Summer visitor. Male from 22 April, with a f. from 3 May. Called and seen feeding often, but not after 31 May. However, the first juvenile to be seen at Blakehill was perched on the roadway fence allowing quite close approach on 28 July.

Barn Owl Resident. One hunting and perched, W. of site, 10 Feb, and two at 4pm on 27 Feb, one in the W. and one in the N. of the site. They seem to prefer the smaller fields, apparently avoiding the open airfield. One, same area as last spring (Poor/Pool Ground), 7/19 May, again 13 June (Brian Danby). Following this, just two further records: one, 9 Aug (Ken Cypher), and one, 7 Nov (Brian Danby).

Little Owl Scarce resident. Seen Easter weekend (Nigel Pleass), heard 26 Apr and 3/28 May. Reported from "4th quarter" at Blakehill in "WOS News Feb 2007"

Short-eared Owl Passage migrant and irregular winter visitor. First winter period: Three seen on 10 Jan (Trevor Stinton), then one on 11 and 20 Jan, seen again by Trevor on 23 Jan. One seen on 27 Feb by Stephen Edwards. One again on 15 and 23 March. The birds were either disturbed in the morning by cattle feeding, or seen hunting in the mid or late afternoon. It is likely they are overlooked, especially in Jan-Feb, when they seem to emerge to hunt later or not at all. On the other hand the bird(s) on 20 Jan and 15 Mar allowed close approach when perched on fence posts. One seen and photographed on 4 April (David Wall), again on 14 Apr., and on 22 Apr.(Nigel Pleass). In May one seen 12th, also by A.N.Other on 17th, and by Trevor Stinton a couple of times around mid May. (Not noted previously in May.)

Few in second half of year, just a bird hunting in full sunshine at 4pm in the centre of the site on 24 Oct, and the same or another in the same area on 5 Nov (Brian Danby) – the fewest sightings in autumn since regular watching started at Blakehill in Autumn 2003.

Swift Summer visitor. Occasionally seen, May - July, particularly on overcast, stormy days, taking insects low over the site.

Kingfisher   One seen flying across site sometime in the summer - first record, not surprisingly (Dave Lee)

Green Woodpecker Resident One seen 13 June (Brian Danby), then present from 9 August – mid Sept, and a second bird at the East end of site, 28 Aug. Also seen 3 and 16 Nov (Ken Cypher) and 6 Dec – not previously noted in winter.

Great-spotted Woodpecker Resident. Occasionally seen flying over site and heard from trees, at all seasons. Breeding eveidence: M. drumming Leighfield Lodge Farm, 9/22 Apr., more unexpectedly, one drumming near Purley Farmhouse, 17 June.

Sky Lark Resident/?passage migrant. The most numerous bird at Blakehill during the breeding season. In 2003 Stephen Edwards calculated 53 pairs breeding.

One already singing on a fine morning on 11 Jan, five days earlier than in 2005. 12 counted singing, E. of site only, on 15 March. One singing in quite a heavy shower on Mar 31. As numerous as ever – closer to 75 than 50 pairs? Pair feeding young near roadway, 16 June. Song last heard on 12 July. In autumn 3 were singing on 8 Oct. On 6 Dec there was an apparent westerly movement over the site involving about 20 birds.

Sand Martin Vagrant. One with other hirundines and Swifts, 20 June

Swallow Summer resident/passage migrant. First,1, 5 Apr., a few still moving N. at end of Apr. Ads and juvs often seen in June, especially at E. end near Chelworth Ind. Est. where probably breeds. Last of the year were 5 moving S. on 8 Oct.

House Martin Summer visitor. Like Swift mainly seen in poor or overcast weather, hawking for insects forced down to low level, but also seen moving through in autumn with Swallows.

Meadow Pipit Resident/passage migrant/winter visitor. Small flock wintering during the first winter period, apparently favouring the field of long grass near the Leigh entrance. Max 20 on 31 Jan, when flushed by the female Merlin. 9 still there on 10 March, while on 28 March the first male was singing in "parachuting" display flight. 4 feeding together, E. of site, 12 Apr. 12 on 15 Apr. M. in brief song flight on 22/29 Apr, then in full song flight 26/31 May. More often heard in June, when perhaps 4 singing males on main "plateau". Last song heard 12 July. Possible juv. seen 9 Aug. First passage, c.5 over on 11 Sept., then c.25 present on site, 15 Sept. On 22 Oct c.50 were present, after which the numbers fell with other counts in double figures – 15 near the Chelworth entrance on 2 Dec, and centre of site 28 Dec, and 16 on 30 Dec (Ken Cypher).

Yellow Wagtail Passage migrant. One heard overhead, 26 Apr. 1 flew over on 26/30 Aug, 2+ seen 1 Sept., 1, 11 Sept., then 5 feeding with cattle, centre of site, 15 Sept.

Grey Wagtail 1 flew NW over east end of site, 13 Sept. – the first record at Blakehill

Pied Wagtail Resident. Present at all seasons - probably breeds –and roosts - on old buildings. A f. collecting food, N. of site, then carrying it to nest in Chelworth Ind. Est., 19 May. M. carrying food from E. of site, again to Chelworth Ind. Est., 11 June.

Wren Resident. Common wherever there is cover.

Dunnock Resident. Common in trees and hedges.

Nightingale 1, 5 July, may also have been present 1 July. Calling from bushes beside roadway then flew out briefly to disappear into another bush – not seen except in flight, when warm brown upperparts and rusty-brown tail seen. Presumably from CWP – the first for Blakehill.

Robin Resident. As Dunnock

Common Redstart Passage migrant. A good year for Redstarts! At least two individuals in spring: One m., 5/9 Apr. W. of site. Possibly a different bird, seen more than a kilometre from the first sighting, at the extreme E. of the site, 12 Apr. Yet another bird, again a male, seen 22 Apr. in the W. of site. These are the first spring records at Blakehill. In "autumn", 2, 9 Aug, then present from 18 Aug, 4 on 18th, 3 on 26th, 2 on 30th, 1, 1 Sept. (In previous years only single birds noted in August.)

Whinchat Passage migrant. 2 males with the Wheatears, 22 Apr. A m. and a f., 3 May, the former a stunningly beautiful individual (Only one previous spring record, a m. on 23 Apr 2004). In autumn, 1, 9/26 Aug., 1/11/23/30 Sept., 2 on 6 Sept., 3, east end of site, 26 Sept.

Stonechat Winter visitor/passage migrant. First winter period: Three, possibly four birds seen – a male and female till 17 Jan, the male alone staying till 10 March. A different male, in duller, perhaps first winter, plumage, seen on 15 March. An immaculate male in full breeding plumage on 28 March may have been a fourth individual.

Second winter period: First seen on 8 Oct, a female/imm., and no fewer than 6 birds were present on 22 Oct, then it is likely that 4 stayed till the end of the year, though only two were seen on most visits, with 3 on 4 Nov (Ken Cypher) and 4 on 8 Nov and 15 Dec. There seemed to be two "pairs" of birds, one keeping mainly to the N. of the site, the other to the SW, though probably both roamed widely, sometimes being seen in the E as well.

Wheatear Passage migrant, birds occurring in six months of the year. Spring records: Male on 25 and 28 March, on the latter date with a male Stonechat - one week later than last year. A f. 1 Apr., 3, 9 Apr., 5, E. of site, 12 Apr., 5, 4 of which were E. of site, 17 Apr. At least 11, 22 Apr., the most yet counted at Blakehill - and E. of site was not visited. 5, all f., 26 Apr. , 4 fs. on 29 Apr/3 May, 2 fs. 7 May, 3 fs. 10 May, a lone f. 12/14 May, then again E. end on the late date of 31 May.

In autumn, 1 on 18/22/26 Aug., 2, 1 Sept., 5, 6 Sept., 1, 15/23 Sept., 2, east end of site 28 Aug. and 13 Sept. Finally 1, centre of site among the cattle on 22 Oct, a day when there was an influx of Stonechats and Meadow Pipits – the first noted in Oct at Blakehill.

1 male on 6 Sept showed characters of Greenland race – very bright with brilliant white supercilia, ear coverts black with white line beneath, deep rufous-buff breast and slate grey upperparts.

Ring Ouzel One on 22 Apr,at the peak of the spring migration (Nigel Pleass), the first for Blakehill.

Blackbird Resident. Common in trees and hedges.

Fieldfare Winter visitor. First winter period, max 40 on 15 Feb. The second winter period saw very good numbers – 30 on 8 Nov were the first on site, rising steadily through November to a peak count of c.250 on 2 Dec, with many remaining to the end of the year – 75 present on 15 Dec.

Redwing Winter visitor. First winter period: small numbers only, max. 12 on 20 Jan. Second winter period, widespread and common from late October with counts of c. 100 on 15 and 21 Nov, falling rather in December. On 11 Nov c.20 were seen apparently going to roost in the copse at Hutt Ground.

Song Thrush Resident. 2 or 3 singing on site. Song heard on 26 July, a fairly late date.

Lesser Whitethroat Summer resident. One singing 22/26 Apr. 2 singing 7/14 May, another singing, E. end of site, 10/24 May, the first heard in that area. Two still holding territory in June, one at extreme W. of site, the other at the extreme E. In July a third bird was heard in the Stoke Meadow area. Last song heard on 12 July. Singles seen and heard calling from 26 July – 6 Sept, 2 on 9/18 Aug. Subsong heard 26 Aug.

Common Whitethroat Summer resident. A very early male in the bushes by the car park, 9 Apr. (the earliest I’ve ever seen.) Next, a pair on 22 Apr., a more usual arrival date. 5 singing 7 May, 2 E. end, 10 May, where feeding young in nest in Purley Farmhouse garden 31 May. Another carrying food to bushes, W. side, 3 June. At least six pairs on site. In autumn singles noted on 15 Aug and 11 Sept., and probably this species on 15 Sept.

Garden Warbler Summer visitor. M. singing from copse by Hutt Ground, 31 May to 16 June– the first heard on WWT land at Blakehill, but not noted subsequently and probably did not stay to breed.

Blackcap Summer resident. 2 singing males this year

Chiffchaff Passage migrant/winter visitor/breeding. About 4 singing males – mainly on the edges of the site – in spring and summer, and in autumn heard singing on 30 Aug.- 2/3 still present 30 Sept., last noted, 2, E. of site on 4 Oct. None in winter this year.

Willow Warbler Summer resident. M.back in the Hutt Ground copse on 5 April, joined by another later. 4/5 singing males on site, mid-April, but only 2/3 stayed to hold territory. Ad. singing and juv. seen, 2 August, another on 16 Aug., song heard again on 30 Aug.

Butterflies and Moths

Total species now 28

Butterflies were counted from the roadway walking S from the Y-junction to the bend near Leighfield Lodge Farm. Numbers given - even maxima - are therefore always only a fraction of the total present at the site. The exceptions to this were the Brown Hairstreaks – and a few other butterflies seen with them – these were all seen along the hedgerow around the field to the SW of the site. Counts were also made at relevant periods of the summer/autumn in the east of the site.

Selected species accounts – for full details see tables at end of report (Note that neither Comma nor Dark Green Fritillary was seen in 2006, the former was seen in 2005, the latter in 2003.)

Small Skipper Single-brooded resident. Due to the similarity between this species and the next, only a proportion of individuals seen are identified to species, so it is not possible to give more than a general idea of their relative numbers,. Present 1 – 28 July, max. <13 on 28th

Essex Skipper Single-brooded resident. Present 11 July – 18 August, max. 2+ on 11 July

It would appear to have been a poorer year than 2005 for the above two species, but this is only a feeling, as no visits were made to Blakehill this year at the peak time for Small Skippers, and the weather in August was poor, which would have affected Essex Skippers.

Large Skipper Single-brooded resident. First seen 9 June, max. 37 on 16 June Present till 11 July – 8 on 1 July

Seems to have been a better year than 2005 for this species.

Grizzled Skipper Single-brooded resident. 1, 7 June, another very fresh (and therefore different) individual at the same place, 17 June. These were my first Grizzled Skippers at Blakehill, although Piers Mobsby saw some last year. They are very hard to find here!

Clouded Yellow Migrant in varying numbers. 1, 3 June – a week later than one in 2005. 1 on 9 Aug (Wiltshire Ornithological Society grapevine), 3, east end of site, 26 Sept, and 2 there on 13 Oct. The best year since 2004 for Clouded Yellows at Blakehill.

Brown Hairstreak Single-brooded resident. 6 seen flying around Ash and Maple trees, Pool Ground, all apparently male, on early date of 26 July; 2 males, one of which was photographed, 9 Aug. 1 or 2 seen elsewhere, to the NW, but still on Pool Ground, 2/15 August. No more sightings till 30 August, when a female, the only one seen this year, was feeding on a clump of blackberries for at least half an hour. Seems to have been a similar year as 2005, though earlier, and poor weather in August affected counts. Again none seen in September.

Purple Hairstreak Single-brooded resident. 1 flying around top of hedgerow oak on 26 July – the first recorded at Blakehill, though suspected last year. Another seen at the same place on 9 August.

Small Copper Double/treble brooded resident. First brood: 2, 28 May – 7 June, 1, 11 June. Second brood: present 28 July – 26 Sept - max 29 on 26 Sept. Two singles in October may have been from a third brood, on 13 and 24 Oct. A superb autumn "flush", even better than in 2003. The East end was where they were all seen after mid- September.

Common Blue Double brooded resident. First brood: 31 May – 23 June, max. 22, 16 June. Second brood present 26 July – 1 Sept - max. 45 on 9 Aug. The best year since at least 2003, though due to cattle grazing in the main area there was a very rapid decline after mid-August.

Chalkhill Blue 1 found dead by Piers Mobsby on 28 July – first for Blakehill! A wanderer from the Wiltshire downs?

Meadow Brown   Additional to details on tables below: one on 4 June (Kathleen Gifford) - the earliest Wiltshire record for the year

Small Heath Double-brooded resident. First brood: 28 May – 11 July, max. 25 on 3 June, second brood from 2 August – 19 Sept - max 9 on 18 August. The first brood was about normal for Blakehill, while the second brood virtually disappeared after mid August when cattle were introduced into its main area.

Hummingbird Hawkmoth 1, 16 Aug., 11/19 Sept – the first since 2004, when there were also 3 records.

Dragonflies

Common Blue Damselfly Common as usual, June - August

Migrant Hawker A few seen from 9 August – September.

Southern Hawker Commoner than in previous years - especially at Pool Ground in August.

Brown Hawker 1, 18 Aug, the only record.

The Emperor (In 2004,commonly seen over the grass, zooming back and forth for prey - seen from 9 Jun. to 21 Aug., usually 2, with perhaps 3 individuals on 13 Jun. In 2005 First seen on 20 June, and ones and twos seen until mid-July, only.) This year, 2 on 16/28 June – seems to be getting scarcer at Blakehill, although it always was a surprise to see them there anyway.

Possible Lesser Emperor Dragonfly 1 on 28 July was either this species or the blue form of the female Emperor (none of the latter species had been seen at Blakehill since 28 June.) Several of these previously rare migrants had been seen at the Cotswold Water Park this summer, but not, as far as I know, away from water.

Black-tailed Skimmer Common as usual from June – early August.

Common Darter Numerous throughout July – September as usual
